Doctor: Pregnant women are at risk of becoming pulmonary hypertension patients

  Dr. dr. Hary Sakti Muliawan, Ph.D., Sp.JP, Subsp.PRKv.(K), a cardiologist and blood vessel specialist in cardiovascular prevention and rehabilitation at the University of Indonesia Hospital (UI Hospital), said that pregnant women are at risk of developing pulmonary hypertension.


"Pregnant women are at risk of developing pulmonary hypertension, usually due to blood clots that can occur after delivery," said the doctor, who is also a member of the Indonesian Cardiovascular Specialist Association, at a press conference in Jakarta on Thursday.


In addition, the doctor, who is also a member of the Indonesian Association of Cardiovascular Specialists, continued, saying that pregnant women often feel short of breath in certain trimesters, but if this condition continues after delivery, it is best to undergo further examination and consult a heart or lung specialist.


He acknowledged that women are often the patients with pulmonary hypertension, not only due to genetic factors such as congenital heart disease, autoimmune diseases, lung disorders, but also due to hormonal factors.
