During annual surveys in the Lake Tekapo area of New Zealand, Department of Conservation inspectors found an unusual grasshopper of the species Sigaus robustus with a rare pink color

The Sigaus robustus grasshopper is typically gray or brown, which helps it blend into the rocks and soil, but this specimen was strikingly different, with a vibrant pink color. Experts suggest this color may be due either to a rare genetic mutation that increases red pigmentation, or to the insect's dietary habits.

This grasshopper appears robust and large, possessing powerful hind legs that enable it to jump high, though its landing is clumsy. Natural camouflage usually helps it survive, but its bright pink color makes it more visible to predators.

The Sigaus robustus species is known to be very rare and endangered, and to protect it, a fenced-off protected area has been established away from predators such as cats, hedgehogs, and birds. This particular grasshopper was found outside the fenced area, making the discovery all the more interesting.

Despite its vibrant color, there is hope that it will survive and pass this unique trait on to future generations. If the pink individuals succeed in reproducing, they may establish a new lineage with an unusual coloring, which will be the subject of ongoing monitoring and study by scientists.
