House Speaker: Flood control in Karangligar will be completed next year

House Speaker: Flood control in Karangligar will be completed next year  Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Saan Mustopa, said the flood control infrastructure project in the Karangligar Village area, West Teluk Jambe District, Karawang, West Java, is scheduled for completion next year.

"We've actually been looking for a solution since last year. The Citarum River Basin Management Agency (BBWS) and the Ministry of Public Works (PU) have finally seen the situation. We're committed to building flood control systems, which we've already begun this year. So next year, the root cause of this flooding can be resolved," Saat said in a statement in Jakarta on Friday.

This was conveyed by Saan when reviewing the flood location in Karangligar Village, Teluk Jambe Barat District, Karawang, West Java, together with the Ministry of Public Works and several members of Commission V of the Indonesian House of Representatives.

Saan last visited Karangligar Village in March 2025. Villagers hoped for a concrete solution from Saan because they had been facing continuous flooding for the past 20 years.

He assessed that flood infrastructure ranging from sluice gates to embankments in the area would be a solution to the root of the flooding problem in Karangligar and its surroundings.

According to various media reports, flooding in Karangligar can occur 20-30 times a year. Worse still, during the rainy season, flooding can occur four to five times a month.

The Karawang Regency Government also reported at the meeting that the flooding had also caused losses to local agriculture. Saan stated that the flooding that submerged local rice fields was also a national loss.

He said that Karawang Regency is a mainstay area in the archipelago in producing various agricultural products, especially rice.

Furthermore, he hopes that the flood control infrastructure to be built in Karangligar will protect the community from flooding. This will allow them to carry out all their activities with peace of mind.

"The hope is, of course, that the community will be free from flooding so they can have certainty about their lives. They will feel calm and comfortable, without the worry of sudden flooding. Their hard-earned possessions will be swept away," he said.
