Studio Ghibli asks OpenAI not to use its work to train AI models

The Japanese content distribution association representing several major publishers, including Studio Ghibli, has sent a letter to OpenAI urging the artificial intelligence (AI) company to stop training its AI models using their works without permission.

As reported by Tech Crunch on Tuesday, Studio Ghibli, known for animated films such as "Spirited Away" and "My Neighbor Totoro," is said to be one of the parties most affected by OpenAI's generative technology.

Since the launch of ChatGPT's built-in image generator app last March, many users have taken advantage of the feature to recreate self-portraits or photos of their pets in the style of Ghibli films. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman even changed his profile picture on the X platform to a Ghibli-style version.

Now, as public access to OpenAI's Sora video-making app becomes more widespread, the Japan Content Overseas Distribution Association (CODA) is demanding that OpenAI stop using its members' work for AI model training without official permission.
