The detention of the Israeli prosecutor who authorized the release of a video showing an attack on a Palestinian prisoner has been extended.

Tomer Yerushalmi, who was arrested today, said in her resignation letter on Friday: "I authorized the publication of materials to the media to refute false propaganda against the army's law enforcement agencies," according to Haaretz newspaper on Monday.

The Israeli newspaper Yediot Aharonot reported: "The Tel Aviv Magistrates' Court decided to extend the detention of the military prosecutor, Yifat Tomer Yerushalmi, for three days."

The newspaper added: "Judge Shelley Cotten explained in her ruling that the suspicions attributed to the resigning prosecutor include fraud, breach of trust, abuse of power, obstruction of justice, and disclosure of information by a public official."

She continued: "The length of the investigation, the personal circumstances of the suspect, and the results of the initial examination indicate the need to allow the investigation to proceed while she is in custody."

In addition to Tomer Yerushalmi, "the detention of former military prosecutor Matan Solomach was extended for three days," according to the same source.

The newspaper quoted a police representative during the session (who was not named) as saying that Solomach is "accused of knowing about the leaking of investigation materials, obstructing the investigation and concealing its events."

But the defense lawyer (who was not named by the newspaper) denied Solomach's involvement, saying that the latter learned of the leak after it had occurred, and indicated that Solomach was "prepared to undergo a lie detector test."

The arrest came as part of an investigation into the leak of a video showing Israeli soldiers sexually assaulting a Palestinian prisoner at the "Sde Teiman" camp in the south.

On Monday, Haaretz reported: "Shortly after the incident (the release of the video), prominent right-wing figures continued to incite against Yifat Yerushalmi, while voices in the opposition objected to these statements."

The newspaper noted that Defense Minister Yisrael Katz said that Tomer Yerushalmi "will not return to her post due to the seriousness of the suspicions surrounding her."

More than 10,000 Palestinians, including children and women, are languishing in Israeli prisons, suffering torture, starvation, and medical neglect that has claimed the lives of many detainees, according to Israeli and Palestinian human rights organizations.

Attacks against Palestinian detainees have increased, in parallel with a genocidal war waged by Israel with American support on the Gaza Strip for two years since October 8, 2023, which left 68,865 Palestinian martyrs and 170,670 wounded, most of them children and women.
