Zarate and Niyomtrong step into the ring for the vacant WBC world title

The World Boxing Council (WBC) announced that boxers Junior Zarate and Thammanoon Niyomtrong will enter the ring to fight for the vacant WBC light flyweight (48.9 kg) world title on December 4 in Bangkok, Thailand.

"This fight will determine the undisputed WBC lightweight champion after the title became vacant due to a situation involving boxer Calos Canizales," the WBC said in a statement on its official website, as monitored in Jakarta on Saturday.

The WBC explained that Canizales's lightweight world title was vacated after the Venezuelan boxer was unable to leave the country to fulfill his mandatory title defense. Canizales now holds only interim champion status.

To maintain competition in the division, the WBC is offering Zarate and Niyomtrong a chance to challenge for the world title. Their fight will take place during the 2025 WBC Annual Convention in Bangkok.

Zarate, one of the division's rising stars, arrives in his first opportunity to challenge for a world title. The Argentine has racked up a string of wins that have elevated him to the top of the rankings.

Carrying a record of 29 wins including nine knockouts (KO), Zarate is determined not to waste the opportunity in a fight that will be crucial for his career.
