Dr. Anastasia Gostrous, a gastroenterologist, warns against lying down immediately after a heavy lunch or dinner, even when you feel like lying on the sofa and relaxing

According to the doctor, while the body may seem to crave lying down after a meal, this habit, though common, is detrimental to digestion and overall health. The most common problem caused by lying down is gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

The lower esophageal sphincter is located between the esophagus and the stomach. It is a muscular ring that acts as a valve, allowing food to enter the stomach and preventing it from flowing back up. When lying down, the stomach becomes horizontal, and the pressure on this valve increases, which may prevent the sphincter from closing tightly, causing the stomach contents to flow back into the esophagus. This leads to a burning sensation known as heartburn, and persistent reflux can damage the lining and lead to a serious condition called gastroesophageal

Lying down after eating also slows down digestion and disrupts peristalsis, the rhythmic contractions of the stomach and intestinal muscles that propel food through the digestive system. This prevents food from properly mixing with gastric juices and enzymes. As a result, food remains in the stomach longer, causing abdominal heaviness, bloating, discomfort, and even nausea, and impairing nutrient absorption.

In addition, the habit of lying down poses a risk to posture and metabolism, because a sedentary lifestyle after eating reduces energy consumption, and calories are stored, especially in the abdominal and waist area, and may negatively affect blood sugar levels.

The doctor points out that eating before bed is a double whammy: the body is forced to digest food instead of resting, leading to sleep disturbances, nightmares, frequent awakenings, and morning lethargy with a heavy stomach and refusal to eat breakfast, which negatively affects the daily diet.

However, the doctor emphasizes that there is no need to completely abandon rest , but rather the following advice should

Maintain a "vertical walking regimen" : Sit or walk slowly for 20-30 minutes after eating, to promote bowel movement and digestion without straining.

Taking a rest after digestion : It is advisable to lie down or sleep at least one and a half to two hours after eating, to allow the stomach to complete the main stage of

Avoid sleeping on a full stomach : It is preferable to eat dinner three to four hours before going to sleep.

"Giving up the habit of lying down immediately after eating helps the body digest more easily and effectively, relieves heartburn and bloating, and helps you get a good night's sleep."
