Changing your iPad's settings to make it child-friendly does require a few extra steps, but Apple's various features make the process relatively easy.
From creating a dedicated Apple ID for your child to managing screen time and privacy settings, parents can control how their child uses their device while protecting them from inappropriate content.
Engadget, Wednesday (24/12), explained that the process is slightly different depending on whether the iPad is new or has been used before, but the principle is the same: create a managed account, connect it to Family Sharing, then adjust the controls to keep your child's digital space safe.
Creating an Apple ID for a child
Each child using an iPad should have their own Apple ID. This way, parents can manage the account through Family Sharing and monitor access to features like iCloud, the App Store, and Messages.
Apple requires parents to create accounts for children under 13, and this process can be done directly from the parent's device.
Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad, tap your name at the top, then select Family. Tap Add Member, then select Create Child Account, and follow the on-screen instructions.
Parents will need to enter their child's name and date of birth, and provide parental consent by entering their Apple ID password. Once created, the account is automatically added to the Family Sharing group.
If a child already has an Apple ID, parents can invite them to join Family Sharing. On the iPad, go to Settings > Family > Add Member , then select Invite People to send an invitation to the child's Apple ID email address.
Once the invitation is accepted, you can manage parental controls from your own device.
