The magazine quoted a statement from the American Heart Association indicating that the new study showed that taking a single combination pill containing several drugs to treat high blood pressure can lower blood pressure more quickly and reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
The experts conducting the study note that most people with high blood pressure need two or more medications at the same time, and when these medications are combined into one pill, it becomes easier for patients to adhere to the treatment and they are less likely to forget to take doses of the medication.
According to the researchers, this approach helps to reach target blood pressure levels more quickly and reduces the risk of cardiovascular complications by between 15 and 30 percent.
The recommendations stressed that combination tablets contain only blood pressure medications, and are not "multi-tablets" that also contain statins or aspirin.
Despite the proven effectiveness of this method, its use remains limited due to cost. However, researchers believe that wider use of this approach to treatment could significantly improve the health of those with high blood pressure.
