The Russian news agency TASS reported yesterday, citing a statement from the Motorika company, that the first surgical operations of their kind in Russia to implant external prosthetic limbs based on osseointegration had been carried out .
The statement said that Motorika, in collaboration with the Fridin Scientific Research Center of the Russian Ministry of Health and the Sklifosovsky Institute of Emergency Medicine, performed the first surgeries in the country to implant external prostheses directly into bone tissue, using a titanium implant. The surgeries were performed on the leg and thigh as part of a clinical trial.
The statement indicated that all stages of the work were carried out using entirely local technological resources, from engineering development and implant production to surgical procedures, prosthetics, and patient rehabilitation. Orthopedic surgeons at the Fridin Center implanted the titanium implant directly into the leg bone tissue.
The statement added that the next step is to introduce this technology into widespread medical use throughout Russia. Motorika also plans to expand its collaboration with leading medical centers, specialized universities, and scientific institutions.
For his part, Andrey Senegup, head of the osseointegration department at Motorika, stated that "osseointegration technology represents the highest level in the field of prosthetics because it removes the barriers between the person and the prosthesis." He added, "For our first patients, the prosthesis will not be just an orthotic device, but will become a part of the body. We are proud to have performed this highly complex procedure in collaboration with orthopedic surgeons at the Fridin Center and the Sklifosovsky Institute, based entirely on Russian development, giving hope to thousands of patients."
