Opsel admits electricity and road access are challenges in restoring connections

The three cellular operators, namely Telkomsel, Indosat Ooredoo and XLSmart, acknowledged that limited electricity and difficult road access are challenges in restoring networks and connections in the three provinces affected by the flood disaster in Sumatra, namely Aceh, West Sumatra and North Sumatra.

Telkomsel President Director Nugroho said that in North Sumatra, 10 percent of BTS are still not functioning, while of the 90 percent that can be activated, not all of them use fiber optic media but rather satellites such as Starlink so that data transport is not as smooth as with fiber optic .

"We have also tried to resolve this, and some of the transportation was cut off due to power issues. So, hopefully, when the power is up, the fiber optic will be up, or when the landslides can be repaired, with the help of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), we can also immediately repair the broken fiber optic lines ," said Nugroho in a press conference on the Coordination Meeting on Handling Telecommunication Access in the Flood and Landslide Disasters in Sumatra at the Monitor Center, Medan, North Sumatra, on Monday.
