Boxer Rene Santiago unified the World Boxing Organization (WBO) flyweight world title with Kyosuke Takami's World Boxing Association (WBA) title after defeating him with a narrow points victory at the Ryogoku Kokugikan, Tokyo.
"The scorecards reflected the razor-thin margin of victory: 117-111 and 115-113 for Santiago, while one judge had it 116-112 for Takami," the WBA reported on its official website.
Their encounter reflected a clash of styles that clashed from the opening bell.
Takumi, who is undefeated and considered one of Japan's promising young talents, tried to apply his trademark aggression, coming forward with a stiff jab and combinations of punches to the body.
However, Santiago showed composure and tactical maturity, relying on footwork, changes of rhythm and sharp counter-punches to stifle the home side's attack.
