A recent medical study has revealed one of the factors that cause severe gum inflammation in the elderly

The researchers analyzed data from 1,227 people aged between 65 and 79, collected as part of the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) during the period from 2009 to 2014.

The results showed that about half of the participants showed signs of gum disease to varying degrees, while 78% of them were found to be consuming low amounts of lycopene, a carotenoid pigment found in tomatoes and red fruits.

After adjusting for variables related to age, gender, race, education level, and smoking, the researchers found that the risk of developing severe gingivitis was about three times lower in people who got enough lycopene compared to those who were deficient in it.

The researchers explained that the study is based on observation and analysis, and does not prove a direct causal relationship between lycopene deficiency and gum and periodontal diseases, but it suggests that improving lycopene intake within the diet may contribute to supporting oral health.
