Apple is no longer guaranteed preferential access to chip supplies from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), as demand for semiconductors for artificial intelligence (AI) surges.
As reported by Macrumors on Monday, according to a report by semiconductor analyst Tim Culpan, Apple now has to compete with other AI-focused companies such as Nvidia and AMD to get chip supplies from TSMC.
This marks a major shift after more than a decade in which Apple-designed chips were the backbone of the Taiwanese chipmaker 's business expansion.
AI accelerators require significantly larger wafer area components per unit than smartphone chipsets . As a result, despite having fewer customers, AI companies can absorb significantly larger production outputs.
This situation means that Apple's chip designs are no longer automatically a priority at TSMC's more than two dozen fabrication facilities.
