  Registered dietitian Meghan Pendleton MS, RD, said that turmeric contains the active compound curcuminoid, which has been isolated and studied for its positive effects on the body.

As quoted in the Eating Well broadcast on Saturday (10/1), he said that in the curcuminoid class, curcumin is generally promoted as a supplement that is beneficial for health.

Turmeric is widely known for its ability to fight inflammation, among other things.

"Its active compound, curcumin, is the driving force behind its anti-inflammatory effects," says registered dietitian Emily Niswanger, MS, RDN.

According to him, curcumin supplements have been shown to reduce inflammation by suppressing the pathways that lead to inflammatory responses.

He said that curcumin also functions as an antioxidant, helping to clean up free radicals that damage healthy cells and tissues in the body.

Due to its role as an antioxidant and its ability to reduce inflammation, curcumin may help reduce joint pain.
