The Senegalese capital vibrated with joy on Sunday evening after Senegal's coronation at the African Cup of Nations, the second in four years for the Lions of Teranga.
In the final in Rabat, Senegal won 1-0 against Morocco after a tense match marked by several controversial refereeing decisions. At one point during the match, the Senegalese players left the pitch to protest against the awarding of a penalty. A Senegalese goal was also canceled, causing anger and incomprehension among supporters gathered in the broadcast spaces in Dakar.
The turning point of the match came when the Senegalese goalkeeper stopped a Moroccan penalty. The victorious goal, scored in overtime, freed an entire people.
"The victory is magnificent. They tried to steal it from us, but thank God, Senegal will always be victorious", rejoiced Mamadou Diallo, amid celebrations in the streets of Dakar.
Visibly moved, Lansana Tamba struggled to contain his joy: "God only knows what I feel. It's an emotional roller coaster, I'm running around. "
Senegal, already winner of the CAN in 2022 against Egypt on penalties, is expected in Dakar on Monday to celebrate this new coronation with its supporters.
