China defeated Belgium in a United Cup group stage match in Sydney, Australia, on Saturday, despite Elise Mertens giving the Chocolate Capital of the World a strong start.
In the singles match, Mertens defeated Zhu Lin 6-2, 6-2 in Group B, according to WTA records. However, China ultimately prevailed in the match after Zhang Zhizhen's victory over Zizou Bergs and China's victory in the mixed doubles.
Belgian number one Mertens made a stunning start to her 12th WTA Tour season with a 1 hour 18 minute victory -- her fourth win in five career meetings with former world number 31 Zhu.
