Egypt, Cyprus and Greece call for respect for state sovereignty

A tripartite meeting between the foreign ministers of Egypt, Cyprus and Greece was held in Cairo on Sunday.

On the agenda: developments in the situation in Gaza, but also in Sudan, Libya and the Horn of Africa. The head of Egyptian diplomacy firmly rejected any attempt to divide the Gaza Strip. With his Greek and Cypriot counterparts, Badr Abdelatty called for respect for state sovereignty, international law and the United Nations Charter: It is unacceptable for a state to demand the implementation of one right while ignoring another. Rights are indivisible, including the question of disarmament and surrender of arms. This is all part of a global whole that includes, of course, the issue of withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, the organic link between the West Bank and Gaza, and the indivisibility of the Gaza Strip.

The three ministers also called for a two-state solution with the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the June 4, 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.

This meeting comes in the wake of the announcement of the composition of the Peace Council for Gaza, which Israel contests, believing not to have been associated with its formation. However, the steering committee was set up at the initiative of US President Donald Trump. Greece was invited to participate in this body: indeed, I confirmed that Greece had received an invitation from President Trump to become a founding member of the Peace Council charter. We have reviewed all the documents very carefully, as you know, the creation of a peace council is in accordance with United Nations Security Council Resolution 2803 underlines George Gerapetritis, Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs.

This Peace Council must supervise the implementation of the second phase of the agreement initialed in Sharm El-Sheikh, which provides for the Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, its reconstruction, as well as the deployment of an international stabilization force.
