Egypt reiterates its support for Sudanese "state institutions"

As the war between the paramilitaries and the Sudanese army approaches its third anniversary, peace efforts resumed Wednesday in Cairo, Egypt.

The head of Egyptian diplomacy reiterated his country's support for Sudan's state institutions.

''Egypt will not stand idly by and will not hesitate to take the necessary measures to preserve Sudan, its unity and its territorial integrity. We also reaffirm that there is absolutely no room for the recognition of parallel entities or militias. Under no circumstances can we put Sudanese state institutions, led by the Sudanese National Army, on an equal footing with other militias.''; Badr Abdelatty said.

The envoy of the UN Secretary General to Sudan, for his part, welcomed the holding of this fifth peace meeting in Sudan.

''This consultative meeting is considered one of the successes of diplomacy. We have now completed the fifth meeting in a year and a half, and if that means anything, it is that everyone recognizes the effectiveness and success of this mechanism which will help us all achieve much in the near future.' '; said Ramtane Lamamra.

The UN and the United States have called on the warring parties to agree to a nationwide humanitarian truce.

The Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary militia, and the army have been at war since April 2023. This conflict, which gave rise to multiple atrocities, plunged Sudan into one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world.
