Uganda: blackout and climate of fear on the eve of the presidential election

Uganda is plunged into a total Internet blackout on the eve of the presidential and legislative elections. The authorities justify this cut by the fight against disinformation, electoral fraud and calls for violence, arguments firmly rejected by the opposition.

The vote promises to be a generational battle between outgoing President Yoweri Museveni and his main opponent, pop star-turned-politician Bobi Wine.

Robert Kyagulanyi, whose real name is Bobi Wine, led a high-tension campaign for his second attempt to become president.

The opposition candidate says around 750 of his supporters have been arrested in recent months by security forces. After a campaign marked by tensions, Bobi Wine calls on his supporters to mobilize massively and vote, despite the Internet shutdown.
