Google has added a new artificial intelligence (AI)-based feature to its Google Photos service that allows users to create meme images using their own photos.
As reported by Tech Crunch on Saturday, the feature, called "Me Meme," utilizes generative AI technology to combine meme templates with user photos.
In an announcement made on the Google Photos community site, Google stated that this feature is still experimental and will initially be rolled out to users in the United States. Development of the Me Meme feature was previously detected in October of last year.
Google explains that AI-generated images may not perfectly match the original photo. For optimal results, users are advised to upload photos with good lighting, clear focus, and a forward-facing face.
The Me Meme feature is designed as a lightweight creative exploration tool, and is part of Google Photos' Gemini AI technology, specifically Nano Banana. Google's same image AI model also has other capabilities, such as transforming photos into cartoon illustrations or paintings.
While primarily entertainment-oriented, this feature is seen as expanding Google Photos' functionality as a space for experimenting with AI technology. Google states that visual personalization-based features, particularly those involving the user's own face, tend to attract users to its app.
Once available, the Me Meme feature will appear in the " Create " tab of the Google Photos app. Users can choose from a provided meme template or upload their own, then add a photo and press the " Generate " button. Google also stated that the number of templates will continue to grow gradually.
Once an image is created, users can save it, share it on other platforms, or select the “ Regenerate ” option to create a different version of the image. Google stated that the full rollout of this feature for iOS and Android users in the United States will occur in the coming weeks.
