Hubert Hurkacz stunned Alexander Zverev before Iga Swiatek rallied from a set down to beat Eva Lys and seal Poland's 3-0 victory over Germany in the United Cup group stage in Sydney, Australia, on Monday.
After missing nearly seven months with a right knee injury that required arthroscopic surgery on July 2, Hurkacz made a brilliant return to action by defeating world number 3 Zverev 6-3, 6-4 to give his country the lead.
"It's been a long time since I competed. I went through a tough seven months with the team, and it was very challenging," Hurkacz said, as quoted by the ATP.
"They all support me, they're all behind me. We've been out of competition for quite a while and we don't know when we'll be able to get back on the court again."
"I just tried to appreciate and enjoy every moment on the court today," said the 28-year-old.
