Junas explains why the 2026 IBL semifinals and finals will use a new format
Indonesian Basketball League (IBL) President Director Junas Miradiarsyah revealed that several factors were the reason for the 2026 season's semifinal and final matches to be held using a new format, from the previous best-of-three to a best-of-five .

He explained that the change in match format was part of an effort to improve the quality of the competition and the commercial value of the league.

"From data from the past few years, we've seen that in the semifinals and finals, on average, the winner has to be determined by the third match, so the outcome is determined closely. Therefore, it's appropriate to increase the number of matches," Junas said in Jakarta on Tuesday.

He explained that the decision was taken after seeing the competitive trends in the last three seasons, especially in the playoff phase .

Based on league evaluations, the team strengths are relatively balanced with high match quality.

Besides the competitive aspect, the audience factor is an important consideration in implementing the new format.

Junas said the semifinal and final matches always received a positive response from the public, with high arena occupancy rates in various host cities.

According to him, the increase in the number of matches is expected to have a direct positive impact on the club, both in terms of the match atmosphere and revenue through match ticket sales.
