Microsoft CEO says society needs to change its view of AI
A few weeks after Merriam-Webster named "slop" as its word of the year, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella also shared his views on the future of artificial intelligence (AI) leading up to 2026, saying that people need to change their perspective on the technology.

In his typically intellectual style, Nadella wrote on his personal blog, as quoted by Tech Crunch on Monday (January 5th), that he wants the public to stop viewing AI as "slop" or random content, and instead see it as a "bicycle for the mind." This term refers to tools that help humans enhance their thinking abilities.

"A new concept that expands on the idea of a 'bicycle for the mind,' so that we always view AI as a supporter of human potential, not as a replacement for humans," he wrote.

Nadella continued, arguing that the debate between AI as "slop" and advanced technology needs to be put behind us. He argued that a new balance is needed in how humans understand the mind and social interactions, taking into account that humans are now equipped with cognitive enhancement tools like AI.

Put simply, Nadella isn't just asking for AI-generated content to be discredited, but he's also urging the tech industry to stop talking about AI as a replacement for humans. He hopes AI will be seen more as a productivity tool for humans.
