More than 500,000 Mozambicans affected by deadly floods

Nearly 500,000 people affected by floods in southern and central Mozambique according to the United Nations.


Heavy rains since mid-December have caused widespread flooding in the provinces of Gaza, Maputo and Sofala. Farhan Haq, deputy spokesperson for the United Nations Secretary-General, provided an update on relief operations on Monday. According to him, more than 510,000 people have been affected to date, with significant damage to health infrastructure and roads. Supply chains are severely disrupted and authorities report the loss of more than 27,000 head of livestock.


Mozambique has officially requested UN assistance with search and rescue operations, preventive evacuations, damage assessment and the provision of temporary shelter. Evacuations continue and 50 temporary accommodation centers across the country are hosting more than 50,000 people. Additional funds are urgently needed to support the humanitarian response. he adds.


These floods affect all of southern Africa, namely South Africa, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Zambia, Tanzania, Botswana, Lesotho and Eswatini. More than a hundred deaths recorded in Mozambique, South Africa declared a state of national disaster on Sunday and is searching for the bodies of victims of this bad weather, and Zimbabwe is not left out.
