Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) and poor-quality diets, driven by aggressive marketing, accessibility, and shifting food environments, particularly in developing nations where over 90% of this demographic resides.

Around one-third (≈30–35%) of young people’s hospitalizations worldwide are linked to poor diet patterns dominated by third-quality, junk, and ultra-processed foods.

- 70% of adolescents consumed more than one third quality food or beverage on the previous day.
- 60% consumed soft drinks & more than one salty processed food.

The Lancet Commission for the year 2025 identifies that the health of adolescents is at a crisis point. It is projected that over 1 billion adolescents aged 10-24 years in the coming decade of 2030 will be in countries beset by multiple preventable challenges such as 3rd Quality of Food & Junk foods Also, there is a vast gap in investments in this sector. Adolescents currently get just 2.4 percent of the global health development investments despite the fact that this age group makes up only 24 percent of the world’s population. Regional challenges for adolescents are vast.

“Third-quality food” is an informal term commonly used to describe junk food and ultra-processed foods that are :-

2. High in sugar, salt, unhealthy fats
3. Loaded with chemical additives (preservatives, colors, flavor enhancers)
4. These foods prioritize long shelf life, low cost, and taste over health.

3. Artificial sweeteners, colors, emulsifiers, preservatives
4. Aggressively marketed, especially to children & youth

Global Situation :-

1. Third-quality food consumption is rapidly rising worldwide in modern era.

3. In many countries, ultra-processed foods now provide 30–60% of daily calories.

Since the 2016 Lancet Commission, progress has been mixed and uneven. Because of better nutrition, vaccines, and fewer communicable diseases, there has been a 27% decline in adolescent mortality. These gains, however, are shadowed by rising threats. Mental health disorders now burden 13 to 14% of adolescents. There are increases in depression, anxiety, and self-harm. Self-harm now appears among the top five causes of death.
