Ramirez faces Benavidez for the third defense of his WBA world title.
World Boxing Association (WBA) cruiserweight (90.7 kg) world champion Gilberto Ramirez will face David Benavidez to defend his title for the third time on May 2 in Las Vegas, United States.

"The confirmation of the fight was announced by Golden Boy Promotions along with both boxing camps last weekend," the WBA reported on its official website, which was monitored.

The Mexican boxer will face Benavidez, an American boxer of Mexican descent, in a prestigious match that also has the World Boxing Organization (WBO) world title at stake.

Ramirez, known by the nickname "El Zurdo," comes into the upcoming fight after a unanimous decision victory over Yuniel Dorticos in June of last year.

The victory marked the second successful defense of his WBA cruiserweight world championship. Ramirez enters the fight with a stellar record of 48 wins and one loss, including 30 wins by knockout .

The WBA explained that the Ramirez vs. Benavidez fight is scheduled to take place over the Cinco de Mayo weekend and is expected to be one of the biggest fights of 2026.

Meanwhile, Benavidez, who has long been known as one of the world's best boxers across divisions ( pound-for-pound ), will face a new challenge by moving up to the cruiserweight division.

The light heavyweight (79.4 kg) world champion is aiming for the opportunity to become world champion in two different divisions by stopping Ramirez.

In his last fight in November 2024, Benavidez stopped Anthony Yarde via technical knockout (TKO) in the seventh round to retain his light heavyweight title. With that victory, he continued his impressive record in the professional ring.

Besides being determined to win a new title, Benavidez will also try to maintain his undefeated record of 31 wins, 25 of which were achieved by knockout.
