Real Madrid loses to Barcelona, Alonso learns from it
Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso has learned from his team's failure to win the 2026 Spanish Super Cup trophy after being defeated by Barcelona 2-3 in the final held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, early Monday morning WIB.

"We're not happy with the result, but we're taking positives from it. The season is still long, and we have to get back to winning ways as soon as possible," said Alonso, as quoted on Real Madrid's website.

The Spanish tactician also asked his players to immediately forget about their defeat in the 2026 Spanish Super Cup once they arrive in Madrid.

Alonso wants Kylian Mbappe and his teammates to focus on their next match, where Real Madrid will face Albacete in the round of 16 of the 2025/2026 Copa del Rey, Thursday (15/1) early morning WIB.

He doesn't want his players to suffer the same fate of failing to capitalize on their opportunities as they did against Barcelona.

In the 2026 Spanish Super Cup final, El Clasico, Alonso felt Real Madrid were not sharp at crucial moments, especially towards the end of the match.

"We fought until the end and were very close to a draw, especially with the last two chances. It's a mixed bag. On the one hand, I'm disappointed not to win, but on the other, I'm proud because the players gave everything from the first minute," said Alonso.

Alonso also highlighted the performances of two of his players, Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappé. He noted that Vinicius displayed impressive performance, consistently pressuring Barcelona's defense until finally scoring in the 45+2 minute.

Meanwhile, Mbappe, who came off the bench after recovering from an injury he suffered in late December 2025, was said to have played according to instructions.

"We wanted him to threaten the opposition's back line and play between the lines or in the spaces. We brought him on to make an impact about 15 minutes before the end of the match because his condition wasn't yet conducive to a high-intensity match from the start," said Alonso.

The defeat to Barcelona meant Real Madrid failed to add to their 13th Spanish Super Cup trophy haul. Their last victory was in 2024.
