Refugee in Togo, ex-putschist Paul-Henri Damiba sent back to Burkina

The former president of the Burkinabè transition, Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, was deported to Ouagadougou according to several sources.

Since his overthrow by Captain Ibrahim Traoré, he had lived in Togo. On January 18, Togolese authorities returned him to his country of origin, after trying him for attempting to destabilize Burkina Faso.

Ouagadougou accuses Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba of being the mastermind of several coup attempts, including the most recent, which occurred at the beginning of the year. According to the Burkinabè authorities, this plot aimed in particular to eliminate Captain Ibrahim Traoré.

Earlier this month, the government claimed that Damiba and his accomplices had planned a series "targeted assassinations" of civil and military officials on January 3, starting with "the neutralization of comrade Ibrahim Traoré".

Former lieutenant-colonel, Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba came to power in January 2022 after overthrowing President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré. He was dismissed eight months later during the coup d'état which brought Captain Ibrahim Traoré to the head of the country.
