Russian scientist Peter Bagriansky, a plasma physicist, points out that supplying the Earth with electricity using solar energy would require covering an area twice the size of France with solar panels

It is worth noting that Elon Musk, the founder of SpaceX, had previously announced that developing reactors on Earth is pointless, because the sun is a free source of energy.

The Russian scientist says: "The efficiency of these solar converters, on a scale, is 12 percent. They are currently semiconductor panels oriented towards the sun. If we took the entire world's electricity consumption and generated it using solar cells, we would need to cover an area twice the size of France. Moreover, this location would have to be near the equator or on the Tibetan Plateau, where sunlight is abundant."

According to his calculations, generating the energy needed to power the Earth would require approximately 200 million tons of semiconductor material. He also stated that the lifespan of these panels is about 30 years, after which they must be replaced.

In addition, according to him, the issue of energy independence for different regions remains of great importance, because the energy sector requires an approach that takes into account the unique characteristics of each region and selects energy sources accordingly.

He says: “For example, in the Arctic region, the solar energy density is almost zero. So in my opinion, there is no need to try to solve the problem of global energy shortages by supplying everything with nuclear energy, because that will create difficulties. We have to deal with it as in agriculture - each region has its own characteristics, and based on these characteristics, specific crops can be grown in it.”
