Russian forces have begun to withdraw from their positions in northeastern Syria. The latter still had equipment at a base located near Qamishli airport.
Ahmed Ali, a Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) fighter deployed to the base, said Russian forces began evacuating their positions around the airport five or six days ago, removing their equipment aboard a cargo plane.
"Russian forces began to withdraw and evacuate the Qamishli airport base five or six days ago, but they remain in Qamishli. They took their equipment by plane and land, but we do not know whether it is intended for the Hmeimim air base (in the Syrian coastal province of Latakia) or for Russia. But they are still present in Qamishli at the moment and are evacuating the airport little by little. ", said Ahmed Ali, SDF fighter.
This area is still controlled by the Kurdish-led SDF, despite the offensive by government forces which caused them to lose most of their territory.
Russia has established relations with the new Syrian government in Damascus since former President Bashar al-Assad was overthrown in December 2024, when Moscow was a close ally of Assad.
