The African Union discusses its relations with the USA

Relations between the United States and the African Union were at the center of a meeting organized in Addis Ababa between US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau and the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf.

At the end of their discussions, the two officials underlined the importance of the economic and strategic partnership between Washington and the African continent, while recognizing the existence of certain concerns on the African side.

The United States reiterated its interest in a stable and prosperous Africa, highlighting the numerous economic and commercial opportunities offered by the continent. Washington also stressed the need to strengthen cooperation in investment and development.

For his part, the President of the African Union Commission expressed concerns regarding certain recent decisions by the American administration, particularly in relation to visa restrictions and guidelines linked to peace policies. However, he underlined the interdependence between the two partners in a globalized world.

Mahmoud Ali Youssouf reaffirmed the African Union's desire to continue collaboration with the United States, describing this relationship as a strategic partnership based on mutual interests: African resources and markets on the one hand, American expertise, technology and investments on the other.
