TikTok has reportedly reached a settlement in a lawsuit related to alleged social media addiction, avoiding a trial that was originally scheduled to begin jury selection on Tuesday (January 27).
As reported by Engadget on Wednesday, the terms of the agreement were not disclosed publicly. The TikTok deal came about a week after Snap also settled in a similar case.
As such, the trial is expected to continue in Los Angeles with Meta and YouTube as the remaining defendants. By opting for an out-of-court settlement, TikTok and Snap are not necessarily admitting to the allegations in the lawsuit but rather reaching an agreement with the plaintiffs outside of the trial process.
The lawsuit was filed by a 19-year-old plaintiff, identified as KGM, against Meta, Snap, TikTok, and YouTube. He accuses these platforms of intentionally designing addictive products that have had a detrimental impact on users, including himself as a child.
