In Madagascar, floods and violent winds caused by Cyclone Gezani have killed 59 people according to the latest figures.
On Monday morning, more than a dozen people were still missing. Gezani is the latest in a series of tropical storms that have struck Madagascar in recent months, highlighting its vulnerability to increasingly extreme weather conditions fueled by climate change.
This cyclone hit Madagascar on February 10th, and more than 16,000 people have been displaced by storm waters since.
Most of the deaths were reported in the port city of Toamasina , on the east coast, formerly known as Tamatave, Madagascar's second-largest urban center with approximately 400,000 inhabitants. According to the BNRGC, 15 people are still missing nearly a week after the cyclone struck.
The damage to homes is considerable, with some 25,000 houses destroyed, another 27,000 flooded and more than 200 classrooms partially or totally destroyed.
