Floods in Spain: Storm Leonardo forces 4,000 evacuations in Andalusia

Torrential rains transformed the village of Grazalema, in the province of Cádiz, into a raging torrent, while several rivers overflowed their banks across Andalusia. Nearly 4,000 people were evacuated, schools were closed, and numerous road and rail links were disrupted in the hardest-hit areas. In Cádiz, police officers had to wade through waist-deep water to rescue people trapped in an abandoned building. Further east, in the province of Granada, the Civil Guard continued its search on Thursday for a woman reported missing near Málaga, swept away by a swollen river while trying to save her dog. While the weather pressure is beginning to ease in the south of the country, with the lifting of red alerts on Thursday afternoon in the province of Cádiz, authorities remain very cautious. New storms are expected in the coming days, keeping the risk of flooding at a high level.
