Every year on February 4th, the world observes World Cancer Day. On this occasion, academic Ivan Stylidi points out that the risk of developing tumors may result from metabolic changes and hormonal imbalances.

According to him, the metabolic changes caused by obesity increase the risk of cancer, as about a third of all malignant tumors are linked to excess weight.

He says: "There are a number of metabolic changes and hormonal imbalances associated with obesity that can increase the risk of malignant tumors, because obesity works through multiple mechanisms, which enhances the effect of these factors. It is currently believed that nearly one-third of all malignant tumors are related to excess weight."

The academic points out that consuming red meat is linked to an increased risk of colorectal cancer.

He adds: "This mainly concerns processed meat products, such as sausages, bacon, hot dogs and the like. We also know for certain that alcohol significantly increases the risk of developing tumors, while consuming vegetables and fiber-rich foods reduces the risk of developing cancer."

Regarding mole removal as a precautionary measure to prevent skin cancer, he emphasizes that only a specialist doctor can identify moles that may pose a risk of developing skin cancer, stressing that removing moles "as a precaution" without a medical diagnosis is meaningless.

He says: "There are moles that carry a risk of developing skin cancer, and others that do not increase this risk. Therefore, removing healthy moles as a precaution is unjustified, and a specialist doctor should be consulted to assess the risk of the mole turning into a malignant tumor."

It is worth noting that the Union for International Cancer Control declared February 4th as World Cancer Day, with the aim of increasing knowledge and awareness about tumors and drawing attention to the importance of their diagnosis and treatment.
