Russia and the US agree on the urgent need for arms negotiations

Russian and American negotiators discussed the expiration of the last nuclear arms treaty between the two countries and agreed on the need to quickly launch new arms control negotiations.

The New START treaty ended on Thursday, leaving the two largest nuclear arsenals without limits for the first time in more than half a century and fueling fears of an unconstrained nuclear arms race.

Russian and American negotiators discussed the future of nuclear arms control in the United Arab Emirates, where Russian, Ukrainian and American delegations held two days of talks on a peace agreement in Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin stated he was prepared to abide by the treaty's terms for another year if Washington did the same. US President Donald Trump ignored this offer and argued that he wanted China to participate in a new treaty, which Beijing refused .

Another American diplomat accused Beijing of secretly conducting nuclear tests.
