Residents of Johannesburg, South Africa, took to the streets to protest recurring water cuts. Their taps have been dry for three weeks. The problem affects several areas of the city.
These South Africans called on the authorities to take the necessary steps for the immediate restoration of the water supply.
"The current situation is that our taps have been dry for two weeks. For some people, since December. For others, since January. The supply is intermittent, and overall, the suburbs of Westdene, Melville, and Sophiatown have been without water, and we've had enough; water is a fundamental human right. And we want to be heard," says Samantha Maree, a resident of Johannesburg.
Accused of inaction, the mayor of Johannesburg states that the city is working to improve the situation.
"We are working with our communities to ensure the water supply for our citizens, and we are fortunate not to be at day zero, as everything we are doing is aimed at ensuring the water supply. Some areas will have difficulties, but we are trying to move things forward and balance the water distribution," says Dada Morero, Mayor of Johannesburg.
These water cuts come as South Africa has been plunged for a year into the hell of record-breaking power outages.
