In South Africa, rhino poaching is accelerating. In 2025, Kruger National Park lost 175 animals, almost double the number from the previous year.
The authorities had, however, put in place measures such as de-horning and lie detector tests for the rangers.
Despite this, poachers continue to target these animals for their horns, which are highly sought after on the black market.
Nationally, 352 rhinos were killed, a slight decrease compared to 2024. Experts highlight the role of dehorning programs and surveillance cameras and sensors.
Kruger National Park has identified a link between failing polygraph tests and increased poaching. Seven rangers were dismissed following these investigations.
To strengthen conservation efforts, the Minister of the Environment is proposing to reintroduce limited export quotas for hunting trophies. Among these, 12 black rhinos could be authorized, as part of a sustainable management plan for endangered species.
