The Chairman of the National Team Body (BTN) of the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI), Sumardji, stated that until now, PSSI has not received an official letter canceling Indonesia's participation in the 2026 Asian Games to be held in Japan.
Sumardji admitted that he had coordinated with the PSSI International Department and the Indonesian Olympic Committee (KOI) to confirm Indonesia's participation status in the Japanese edition of the Asian Games.
"Until now, we have not received an official letter stating that we will not be participating in the Asian Games in Japan," Sumardji told reporters at the Indomilk Arena Stadium, Tangerang Regency, on Wednesday.
Previously, news emerged in the Vietnamese media that the Indonesian national team would not be able to participate in the 2026 Asian Games because they did not qualify for the 2026 U23 Asian Cup.
The AFC and the Olympic Committee of Asia (OCA) have reportedly agreed on new regulations, which state that the men's football teams at the 2026 Asian Games will be the 16 participating countries at the 2026 Asian U23 Cup.
Sumardji added that PSSI is still waiting for confirmation because the main authority for Indonesia's participation in the Asian Games lies with the Indonesian Olympic Committee.
"We will continue to coordinate, as this is the Olympic Committee's jurisdiction. We will update our media partners with further details soon," he said.
Sumardji stated that in PSSI's initial plan, the Indonesian national team was projected to appear in the 2026 Asian Games.
