Telegram announced that it had blocked more than 200,000 groups and channels on the app in a single day.
According to the application's statistics, which were reviewed by the Russian news agency Novosti, Telegram blocked 235,282 groups and channels on Sunday, February 15. This was the highest number of blocked channels and groups recorded since January 23 (which saw 300,480 groups and channels blocked that day).
Since the beginning of February, Telegram has blocked 1,856,069 groups and channels from the application, including 7,116 groups "linked to terrorism." Since the beginning of this year, Telegram has banned 7,256,305 groups and channels, including 27,282 groups "linked to terrorism."
The app also saw widespread blocking of groups and channels that violated its rules last year. On November 13 alone, 519,645 groups and channels were blocked from the app.
Telegram officials noted that since 2015, the monitoring process has included user complaints and machine learning-based monitoring, and at the beginning of 2024 these efforts were reinforced with AI-based monitoring tools.
