The European Aviation Safety Agency recommends avoiding Iranian airspace.

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency has urged airlines to avoid Iranian airspace, amid US threats to the country.

“The presence of a large array of weapons and air defense systems and the potential for their use, as well as unpredictable reactions from the state… all pose a significant risk to civilian flights operating at all altitudes and flight levels,” the agency said in a statement, according to Reuters.

The agency warned of an increased risk of aircraft being mistakenly targeted in Iranian airspace amid continued tensions and the possibility of US military action, which has put Iranian air defense forces on high alert.

Flight tracking website data showed that European airlines, including Wysair, Lufthansa and British Airways, avoided flying over Iran and Iraq on Thursday despite the airspace being reopened.
