Brazilian athlete Lucas Pinheiro Braathen won the gold medal in the men's giant slalom event at the Milan-Cortina 2026 event on Saturday (February 14), securing the first medal ever won by South America at the Winter Olympics.
The 25-year-old Brazilian delivered a remarkable performance, clocking 1 minute 13.92 seconds in his first run and 1 minute 11.08 seconds in his second, for a total time of 2 minutes 25.00 seconds. Lucas finished 0.58 seconds faster than defending champion Marco Odermatt of Switzerland, who had to settle for silver. Odermatt's teammate, Loic Meillard, won bronze.
Another Swiss skier, Thomas Tumler, finished fourth, missing out on the podium by 0.28 seconds. China's Liu Xiaochen finished 58th.
