  Salt, or sodium, is an essential ingredient in cooking. It not only provides a savory flavor, but also maintains fluid balance in the body, regulates blood pressure, and ensures proper nerve and muscle function.

 although sodium plays a good role for the body, consuming it in high amounts will actually cause serious problems for the body.

"Too much sodium can cause the body to retain excess water. This extra fluid can increase the amount of blood flowing through your blood vessels, which for many people contributes to high blood pressure over time. The kidneys work to maintain sodium and fluid balance, and when intake is consistently high, that balance becomes more difficult to maintain," says dietitian Drew Hemler, M.Sc., RD, CDN.
