In eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, the army claims to have discovered a large arms cache in Ituri province.
According to the military operations spokesman, dozens of crates of ammunition, AK-47 type assault rifles and grenades were found buried in a mining site in Noro , in the Djugu territory.
According to the Congolese army, this arsenal belongs to the Convention for the Popular Revolution , a militia linked to former warlord Thomas Lubanga , convicted by the International Criminal Court and who returned to the region about a year ago.
Military authorities claim that these weapons were abandoned after several operations against the armed group in recent months. The militia has also reportedly been weakened by internal defections, including the resignation of several of its leaders.
But according to some researchers, the group remains active in certain areas of the Djugu territory and retains a capacity for recruitment.
Clashes between Congolese armed forces and militia fighters were also reported this week in the region.
