The Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the 2026 World Cup, Heimo Schirgi, emphasized that the world's biggest football tournament is unlikely to be postponed despite the global geopolitical situation heating up due to the conflict in the Middle East, particularly the war involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
"Basically, we're taking it day by day, and in time, we'll have a resolution. And the World Cup will still go on, right? The World Cup is too big, and we hope everyone who has qualified can participate," Schirgi said.
Schirgi explained that the organizers continue to monitor the global situation while working with federal partners and international institutions to evaluate the current situation.
However, until now, according to him, there has been no strong reason that could trigger the postponement of the four-yearly tournament.
He also revealed that FIFA is still in constant communication with the Iranian Football Federation to obtain the latest information regarding the developing situation.
"If I had a crystal ball, I could tell you now what will happen, but obviously the situation is constantly evolving," Schirgi said.
