Instagram will remove support for end-to-end encryption

Instagram will eliminate support for end -to-end encryption  in its services after May 8, 2026.

notification about the change was delivered in the Instagram Help Center.

According to the Instagram Help Center, end-to-end encrypted messaging on Instagram will no longer be supported.

A notice in the Instagram Help Center says that app users whose chats are affected by the change will see instructions on how to download any media or messages they want to save.

"If you are using an older version of Instagram, you may also need to update the app before you can download the affected chats," the app provider's notice reads.

End-to-end encryption support ensures that only the user and the person they are communicating with can see or listen to the messages sent.

Once that support is removed, Meta will be able to see and hear everything users post on Instagram. Similarly, governments can request user data from Instagram.

Instagram on its help center page states that for reporting and optional features, users or people involved in the chat can still choose to share messages with Meta.
