The online game Roblox has launched a new artificial intelligence (AI)-based feature that can automatically change or paraphrase inappropriate language in in-game conversations.
As reported by Engadget on Sunday, Roblox previously used AI filters to block words or phrases that violated community policies. However, the system simply replaced censored messages with hash marks (####), which often made conversations difficult to understand.
Through this latest feature, words or sentences that are deemed inappropriate to say will be replaced with more polite expressions by the AI, so that the flow of the conversation can still be understood by the player.
Roblox Chief Safety Officer Rajiv Bhatia said the initial implementation of this feature is focused on offensive language. For example, if a player writes " Hurry TF up ," the system will replace it with " Hurry up ."
Each edited message will be accompanied by a note stating that the sentence has been paraphrased by the system. The sender will also be able to see the edited language. However, players who continue to use offensive language may still be subject to sanctions for violating community policy.
