The Syrian Ministry of Defense's Media and Communication Department announced that border guards thwarted an attempt to smuggle weapons across the Syrian-Lebanese border.
The administration said that "border guard forces in Jaroud Flita, west of Damascus, thwarted an attempt to smuggle weapons on the Syrian-Lebanese border following a well-executed ambush."
She added: "The operation resulted in the arrest of 4 people, including two of Lebanese nationality, and the seizure of a quantity of various weapons and ammunition. They were referred to the competent authorities to take the necessary legal measures against them."
At the beginning of this month, Syria reinforced its presence on the border with Lebanon with missile units and thousands of soldiers amid the widening conflict in the region and the escalation between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Syrian officers reported that the Syrian reinforcements began in February, but their pace has accelerated in recent days. The Syrian and Lebanese armed forces have not yet responded to requests for comment.
Syrian officers, including a high-ranking one, said the move was aimed at preventing arms and drug smuggling, as well as preventing the Iranian-backed Lebanese Hezbollah, or any other armed groups, from infiltrating Syria.
