The DRC will launch its second national census, 42 years later

The Democratic Republic of Congo is preparing to launch the second General Population and Housing Census in its history.

The first one took place in 1984, at a time when the country had nearly 30 million inhabitants.

Today, the population is estimated at 110 million. According to the Deputy Prime Minister, this operation will help define basic social needs in order to anticipate appropriate solutions through large-scale national and international projects and programs.

Guylain Nyembo stated that the RGPH2 will serve as a database for sampling units in the context of intercensal surveys.

Forty-two years after the first and last census, the authorities acknowledge the lack of reliable, up-to-date demographic data.

This poses a real challenge for the planning and implementation of public policies.
